Funghuang China (November 28th 2016)

Fenghuang was a spur of the moment addition to our plans. After seeing a few pictures and with the recommendation from the lady at the Zhangjiajie hostel we decided to give it a go.

Our bus tickets were for the morning of November 28th at 9:30am. We arrived at the station at 8:30 and the bus left as soon as we arrived. For some reason it seemed like this half full bus was just waiting for us; however, we weren't really sure and just chalked it up as another example of the uncertainty of China  travel.

We arrived in Fenghuang at 12:45 pm. The bus dropped us off in what looked like a big parking lot on the edge of town. We were able to take a taxi to the old city where we easily found our hostel. The hostel was located in a very old building right next to the river. We were a little overwhelmed at first with the ancient surroundings in this UNESCO World Heritage site.

The ancient town of Fenghuang is a breathtaking riverside settlement of winding alleys, temples and rickety stilt houses. Our hostel, like all the other buildings, was perched on stilts and our balcony overlooked the river.

It is known in China as one of four remaining ancient towns and for some strange reason it is mostly visited by only Chinese tourists.

Unfortunately we only spent one night in this unique place. We both wished we could have stayed longer in this Asian flavoured Venice that looked as though it hadn't changed in hundreds of years. The next day we had a bus ticket already booked, a bus that took seven hours from Fenghuang to Guilin.
